What is a wa.me link?
A wa.me link is a plain URL that opens a WhatsApp chat with a specific phone number. The format is https://wa.me/<number>, where the number is the full international number with digits only. Tapping it on a phone opens the WhatsApp app; on a computer it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. WhatsApp calls this feature click to chat.
The person tapping does not need your number saved, and you do not need an API or a developer. That is why the same link works in a Google Ads sitelink, an Instagram bio and a printed flyer.
How do I add a pre-filled message to a WhatsApp link?
Add ?text= after the number, followed by your message with special characters percent-encoded. Spaces become %20, a line break becomes %0A. The generator above does this for you. The visitor still has to press send, so write the message as something they would be comfortable sending.
A useful habit: put a short source tag in the message, such as "Hi, I found you on Instagram" or "Ref: spring-flyer". It costs the customer nothing and tells you where the chat came from, which matters more than you would expect once you run more than one channel.
What are the three most common wa.me mistakes?
Almost every broken wa.me link comes from the number part. Fix these three and the link works.
- Keeping the local leading zero. A Pakistani mobile written as 0300 1234567 must become 92 300 1234567. The 0 is a local trunk prefix and has no place after the country code. The same applies to UK, Indian landline and many other formats.
- Adding a plus sign. Write wa.me/923001234567, not wa.me/+923001234567. Some apps tolerate the +, others fail to open the chat.
- Leaving spaces, dashes or brackets in. They break the URL or get encoded into something WhatsApp cannot read. Digits only, with no 00 prefix either.
A fourth, quieter one: the number must be registered on WhatsApp. If it is a landline or a SIM that never installed the app, the visitor lands on an error screen. Always use the Test button before you print anything.
Where should I use a WhatsApp link?
Anywhere a customer might want to ask a question instead of filling a form. These placements tend to earn their keep:
- Ads: as the destination URL of a Google or Meta ad, or a Click-to-WhatsApp ad where Meta handles the tap. See WhatsApp campaigns for follow-up after the first reply.
- Instagram and Facebook: paste the link in your bio, or in a story link sticker. Use a short message like "Hi, I saw your post about...".
- Google Business Profile: add it to the website or appointment URL field, or as a post button, so a nearby searcher can message you in one tap.
- Email and website: in your signature, on a contact page, or as the floating button snippet above.
- Print: shop windows, menus, invoices and packaging, as a QR code.
How do I make a WhatsApp QR code that scans reliably?
Use dark code on a light background, keep the white border (the quiet zone) around it, and print it at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide. Test it with two different phones before sending it to the printer. Low contrast, reversed colors and a cropped border are what cause most failed scans.
- Download the SVG for print. It scales to a poster without blur. Use the PNG for social posts and slides.
- Add a one-line call to action next to the code, such as "Scan to chat with us". Unlabeled codes get ignored.
- Keep the pre-filled message short. Long text makes the QR denser and harder to scan at a distance.
- Print a different message in each location, for example "Table 4" or "Window poster", so you know which one worked.
What are the limits of wa.me links, and how do you track the source?
A wa.me link has no analytics: you cannot see clicks, scans or which placement produced a chat, and the link carries no hidden data. A pre-filled message is also editable, so customers sometimes delete your source tag before sending. Treat the message as a hint, not as proof.
To track source properly you need the chat to land in a system that records it. A WhatsApp CRM turns each new chat into a contact and lead card in a pipeline, so you can see who messaged, what they said and where they are in the sale. For Click-to-WhatsApp ads, WhatsGrow also attaches the ad referral details to the lead (currently live in the real estate pack). An AI agent can reply in seconds while you are asleep. If you are comparing costs, the WhatsApp Business API pricing guide covers what Meta charges.
Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp link generator free?
Yes. The generator is free, needs no account and has no usage limit. It runs entirely in your browser, so the phone number and message you type are never uploaded to our servers.
What is the difference between wa.me and api.whatsapp.com/send links?
Both open a chat with the number you specify. wa.me is the shorter format that WhatsApp documents for click to chat, and it redirects to the same destination. Use wa.me unless a platform specifically asks for the longer form.
Does the wa.me link work if the person has not saved my number?
Yes. Anyone with WhatsApp installed can tap the link and start a chat with a number that is not in their contacts. The number must be registered on WhatsApp, or the tap ends on an error page.
Can I see how many people clicked my wa.me link?
Not from the link itself. wa.me gives you no analytics. You can wrap it in a UTM-tagged redirect on your own site, or put a unique code in the pre-filled message so you can recognize the source when the chat arrives.
Does a WhatsApp QR code expire?
A QR code made from a wa.me link does not expire, because it simply encodes the URL. It stops working only if you change or lose the WhatsApp number it points to.
Can I use the same link for a WhatsApp Business app number and an API number?
Yes. A wa.me link works with any number registered on WhatsApp, whether it runs on the WhatsApp Business app or the Business API. What happens after the tap depends on how the number is managed, for example a shared team inbox or an AI agent.
